HISTORY

1840 : Beginning of the GARNIER history in the village of Salignac-sur-Charente (Charente-Maritime, France) with the birth of Frédéric GARNIER, grandfather of the founder, who became a cooper. Later, in 1917, Jacques GARNIER, founder, was born.

1940 : Jacques GARNIER settles his own business starting the activities of GARNIER Cooperage.

1985 : Sale of « S.A. Tonnellerie GARNIER » to Hennessy Cognac.
Bertrand GARNIER, nephew of the founder, remains at the management of the cooperage.

1997 : Purchase from Hennessy of Tonnellerie GARNIER by Henri de Pracomtal and his family.
Tonnellerie GARNIER becomes a « Chêne's link », as the company « Chêne & Cie » has been formed to regroup the three cooperages bought by the de Pracomtal family (GARNIER, TARANSAUD and CANTON).

1999 : Tonnellerie GARNIER is managed by Laurent BESSON, Master Cooper, and the production of wine barrels in European oak is added to the production of cognac barrels in French oak. It is the beginning of the Alpha barrel,  made from equal proportions of top-quality French and Central Europe oak.

2002 : Launching of Alto barrel, made with 100% Central Europe oak.

2005 : Launching of G3 and G4 barrels, made with 100% Central Europe oak seasoned naturally in the open-air during 3 or 4 years.
2008 : Since the creation of Kádár Hungary at the beginning of the year, Garnier has stopped making barrels from Central European oak. We propose now top quality Hungarian oak barrels made in the Kádár Hungary cooperage situated in Budapest.
Garnier cooperage offers barrels made exclusively with French oak for the Cognac activity, under the brand "Tonnellerie de Salignac".
